For a while now, there’s been a lot of buzz that RBI might launch an RBI Grade A exam for Generalist roles, especially since the RBI Grade B cycle is running unusually late. Some even believed RBI could be planning to phase out RBI Grade B altogether and replace it with a new format under RBI Grade A.

But as of now, there’s no official word on that.

On July 11th, RBI released a notification for Specialist Officers (SO). The posts include both Grade A and Grade B roles, and the exam is scheduled for August 16th, 2025. The

That announcement sparked fresh hope that maybe an RBI Grade A notification would follow soon. But nothing has been released so far, and there’s been no update from RBI either.

What Everyone Was Expecting?

Since late 2024, rumours have been doing the rounds that the RBI will introduce a Grade A exam for Generalist posts, indicating the delays and uncertainty in the Grade B exam as well.

It was said that RBI could come up with a new entry-level position designation, such as RBI Grade A, and get rid of Grade B. Some even came up with the possibility of the Grade A exam being easier and less complicated, with fewer phases or eligibility requirements.

And this speculation gained more power when the RBI published the Specialist Grade A and B notice in July 2024. Everyone presumed that it would be followed shortly by the Generalist Grade A exam.

But here we are, mid-2025, and still waiting.

Why the Delay in RBI Grade A Notification?

There does not seem to be a single reason, but some suggestions can be identified:

1. Internal Discussions Still Going On

In case RBI is really considering such a significant change (Grade B to Grade A), then it would involve approval on various levels, including internal HR and probably the Ministry of Finance as well.

And all such structural changes are time-consuming. Government and policy don't move work overnight.

2. Internal Restructuring in RBI

A very definite possibility of this delay is the internal restructuring job in the RBI HR and recruitment. As more specialized roles in finance are developed in the banking sector, and the previous banking system becomes more digitized, RBI might come up with more specialized jobs.

There is even an increased notion that RBI is aiming to change the current perspective to domain-specific hiring, and this may be the reason why only Specialist Officer vacancies have been announced as of the year 2025.

3. RBI Might Still Be Figuring Things Out

It may also be the case that RBI is not in a hurry to abolish Grade B, although the way Grade A will work has not been decided yet.

Perhaps then there will be two. Hopefully, Grade A will follow after some time. At this point in time, the final decision has apparently not been reached, and/or, at least, they are not yet prepared to announce it publicly.

Will RBI Grade A Happen in 2025?

At this point, nobody can say for sure. But based on patterns, if the exam has to happen this year, the notification may come around August to October 2025.

That would give RBI enough time to conduct the exam before the year ends or early 2026. But again, that’s just a guess; nothing official has been shared yet.

What Should Aspirants Do Now?

Honestly? This is the time to quietly keep preparing.

If RBI does introduce Grade A, the syllabus is likely to be similar to Grade B, just slightly simpler. So whatever you’re studying now won’t go to waste.

The worst thing to do right now is stop preparing just because the notification hasn’t come yet. You’ll only lose the advantage of time.

Also, don’t fall into speculation traps. Stick to authentic sources. If RBI has something to announce, they’ll do it on their website.

What About RBI Grade B?

There’s silence on that, too.

Some people think Grade B is being scrapped. Others think it’s just delayed and may come later. Till now, no official announcement has been confirmed either.

So again, best not to guess too much.

Final Words

Indeed, the wait is annoying. However, this does not mean that the exam won’t take place this year.

RBI is actively filling positions, as seen by its hiring for Specialist Grade A & B positions.

The fact that RBI is hiring for Specialist Grade A & B shows they are actively filling roles. It’s just that the Generalist post might be going through a rethinking phase.

Keep studying. Keep your plan flexible. And whenever RBI is ready, make sure you are too.
