B Tech students in these fields get the highest salaries study by IIT Bombay

February 22, 2023

A comparative cluster study of remuneration packages of high-performing students in certain departments at IIT Bombay reveals that engineering students from the Computer Science, Mechanical, and Electrical departments are largely hired for high-paying employment.

The study examines five-year placement data from 2014 to 2018 and concludes that high academic achievement is frequently rewarded with a placement. Nevertheless, a high Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) — a weighted average of achievement in all courses in the programme – employed as a placement factor may not necessarily result in a high-paying employment. According to the report, how much one is paid relies on aspects such as the branch of engineering and the industry of engineering, among others.
A comparison of sectors and jobs in the study's categories of "high-scorers," "medium-scorers," and "low-scorers" reveals that non-core jobs are a majority preference. During the years 2016, 2017, and 2018, the distribution of middle and low scorers becomes more equal handed. According to data, in most years, more than 60% of students in the low and medium scored categories selected non-core occupations. High-scorers, on the other hand, have a nearly 50:50 split between core and non-core preferences.
"According to the distribution pattern, Computer Science is the leader with the highest CPI. Electrical Engineering has the most diverse distribution. The batch strength of the five departments being studied here is comparable. Furthermore, we notice just a minor variance in the median CPIs among departments, with all values lying between 7 and 8, according to the report.
