About IIT Madras

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras is known both nationally and internationally for excellence in technical education, basic and applied research, innovation, entrepreneurship and industrial consultancy. A faculty of international repute, a highly motivated and brilliant student community, excellent technical and supporting staff and an effective administration have all contributed to the pre-eminent status of IIT Madras. The Institute is proud to bear the laureate of being No.1 engineering university in India. More recently, IIT Madras has been given the title of Institute of Eminence.

In 1956, the German Government offered technical assistance for establishing an institute of higher education in engineering in India. The first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, West Germany for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras was signed in 1959.

The Institute was formally inaugurated in 1959 by Prof. Humayun Kabir, Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs. The IIT system has sixteen Institutes of Technology – the first of these to be instituted were at Kharagpur (estb. 1951), Mumbai (estb. 1958), Chennai (estb. 1959), Kanpur (estb. 1959), Delhi (estb. 1961), Guwahati (estb. 1994) and Roorkee (estb. 1847, joined IITs in 2001).

Admissions

Indian Institute of Technology Madras Admission Procedure:-

Indian Institute of Technology Madras admissions are offered to B.Tech/B.E programmes based on JEE Advanced scores, to M.Tech and M.E programmes based on GATE scores, to M.Sc programmes based on JAM scores, to M.A programmes based on HSEE scores, to MBA programmes based on the merit of the written test followed by an interview. IIT Madras also offers admissions to Ph.D and M.S programmes based on the performance of students in the written test and interview conducted by the authorities of the institute. Students also have to appear and qualify the counselling process and seats will be allotted to them based on the merit of the rank list prepared on the basis of respective exams. However, students also have to visit the institute campus for document verification and fees payment before getting final admissions. A detailed information about the IITM admission procedure is given below.

IIT Madras Admission Procedure for B.Tech /B.E programmes-

  • Candidates seeking admission to B.Tech/B.E programmes, have to appear and qualify JEE Advanced. 

  • Based on their scores in JEE Advanced, candidates have to register for JoSAA counselling on the official website of JoSAA and choose IIT Madras as their top preference.

  • Candidates are offered admission to B.Tech/B.E programmes based on JoSAA registration, participation in counselling, choice filling, choice locking, document verification and fee payment.

IIT Madras Admission Procedure for M.Tech/M.E programmes-

  • Candidates seeking admission to these postgraduate programmes need to appear and qualify GATE.

  • Based on the qualifying scores, students have to register themselves for counselling on the official website of Indian Institute of Technology Madras.

  • Candidates need to register themselves for counselling by providing their exam credentials, qualifying degrees, personal details and fees payment.

  • Candidates will get admission to M.Tech/M.E programmes after the successful verification of documents and payment of fees.

IIT Madras Admission Procedure for M.Sc programmes-

  • Candidates seeking admission to M.Sc programmes need to appear and qualify JAM.

  • Based on their JAM scores and eligibility criteria, candidates need to register themselves for JAM counselling on the official website of JAM by providing their JAM credentials, qualifying degrees certificates, personal details and fees payment.

  • Candidates will have to select IIT Madras as their first preference while doing the choice locking.

  • Candidates will be offered IITM admissions to M.Sc programmes based on the counselling participation, choice locking, choice filling, document verification and payment of fees.

IIT Madras Admission Procedure for M.A programmes-

  • Students are offered admissions based on the scores of Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE).

  • Students scoring qualifying marks have to register themselves for the counselling process on the official website of HSEE.

  • Students have to fill the registration forms by submitting all documents and pay the amount of fees.

  • Students have to select IIT Madras as their first preference while doing the choice locking in the counselling process.

  • IIT Madras admissions will be offered after document verification and fees payment.

IIT Madras Admission Procedure for MBA programmes-

  • Students seeking admissions must have a valid CAT score.

  • Students qualifying from IIT having a CGPA of 8 or more don't need to qualify CAT.

  • Eligible students also have to appear and qualify the written test conducted by IIT Madras followed by an interview.

  • Students will be offered admissions based on the performance of written test and interview, document verification and fees payment.

  • Admissions are offered based on the performance of the written test followed by an interview.

  • Eligible candidates have to apply for admissions on the official website of IIT Madras.

IIT Madras Admission Procedure for Executive MBA programmes-

  • Students seeking admissions have to qualify the written test conducted by the authorities of IIT Madras.

Scholarships

  • 100% Tuition Fee waiver for SC/ST/PH students.
  • Full remission of the Tuition Fee for General and OBC students whose family income is less than ₹1 lakh per annum.
  • Remission of 2/3rd of the Tuition Fee for General and OBC students whose family income is between ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh per annum.
