Universities need prior UGC approval for online distance learning courses

December 01, 2022

Before institutions may provide courses via open and online learning, the University Grants Commission (UGC) must now grant advance clearance.
According to the government statement announcing the ruling, universities may offer courses with the commission's permission as long as they follow all of the rules' conditions.
"Universities may offer courses in the Open and Distance Learning mode with the Commission's approval, provided they meet all of the conditions laid out under the regulations, by whatever name they are called, pertaining to open and distance learning mode notified by the UGC from time to time," it added.
